Certified Nurse Midwife Amy Palmer
Joins Partners in Health
Lawrenceburg, Ind., January 18, 2008 – Dearborn County native and resident Amy Votaw Palmer has joined the Partners in Health medical practice as a certified nurse midwife in the Woman’s Center.
“We’re pleased Amy Palmer has joined our staff,” said Dr. Lynn Eiler, president of Partners in Health. “She will be working with doctors Glenn Dobbs and Carol Lovins, and her presence greatly expands our ability to serve more patients in the area of obstetrics and gynecology.”
“As she joins us, we’re committed to helping the community develop a greater understanding of the wide range of medical procedures performed by a nurse midwife,” said Dr. Dobbs. “This is a growing field in the medical profession.” Dr. Lovins explained that nurse midwives have their own patients, deal with normal pregnancies and deliveries, and perform routine gynecological procedures.
“This is a wonderful opportunity to practice medicine in the community where I was raised and now live,” said Palmer. “I knew after nursing school that I wanted to pursue an advanced nursing career. I enjoy interacting with people and the nurse midwife profession allows me to develop a relationship with patients on a long-term basis and often be a part of what is one of the greatest moments in their lives.”
There are 10,000 certified nurse midwives in the United States. Babies delivered by nurse midwives in 2004 totaled 300,000 or 8.4 percent of all births, up from 3.8 percent in 1989. Ninety-nine percent of births take place in a hospital or birthing center.
Palmer grew up in Aurora and graduated from South Dearborn High School. She earned her registered nurse diploma at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati. As a staff nurse at St. Luke West Hospital in Florence, Ky., she worked in the Birthing Center and liked the experience. She also worked three years in the Birthing Center at Dearborn County Hospital.
She continued her education while working and earned her bachelor of science in nursing from Indiana Wesleyan University, a certificate in nurse-midwifery from the Frontier School of Midwifery and Family Nursing, and eventually a master of science in nursing from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland.
She served on the staff of two private practice medical groups, most recently as one of six nurse midwives at St. Luke Nurse Midwives in Florence.
Palmer and her husband Tommy, a wealth management advisor with Huntington Investment Company, live in Lawrenceburg with their two daughters, Lilly and Haylee.
Partners in Health was founded in 1999 and includes nine physicians in three practice areas. Physicians are: Family Practice – Dr. Daniel J. Barkdoll and Dr. David W. Dobbs; Internal Medicine – Dr. Lynn Eiler, Dr. Nancy A. Kennedy, Dr. Samantha Wood, Dr. Thom Bunnell and Dr. Radu Zidarescu; Women’s Center (Obstetrics/Gynecology) – Dr. Glenn L. Dobbs and Dr. Carol M. Lovins. The practice moved to its own medical facility on the riverfront in downtown Lawrenceburg in 2005.
